Emerging Technology #2 TeacherTube

TeacherTube is a resource that I have never used in my classroom.  It is actually an educator’s version of YouTube.  My school district blocks YouTube, so this seems to be a great alternative because it is content appropriate and easily accessible.  The site officially launched in March 2007 and has been gaining popularity ever since.  Teachers can browse through numerous videos, documents, lesson plans, audio, and pictures from every and content area and topic imaginable.   Once you sign up for an account, members can upload, tag, and share videos.  Files can be uploaded to support classroom activities and assessments.  Videos can also be embedded on websites or blogs.  As with any media that students will be viewing, it is always a good idea to preview the content ahead of time to make sure it is appropriate. One feature of TeacherTube that I found especially interesting is that you can make videos public or private, by either broadcasting them worldwide or only to people you invite to view the video.  Who knows….maybe I will even get ambitious enough to create a video and upload it to TeacherTube!   Another feature that I plan to utilize is the teacher resource section, which is a partnership between TeacherTube and Pearson Education.  The content is organized by subject, grade, and theme. The resources include links to a variety of printable, lesson plans, class management, graphic organizers and calendars.

Here is a TeacherTube video that I plan to show my students to introduce my science unit on rocks and minerals:
